Music and spirituality: the return of the goddess

Music and spirituality: the return of the goddess

In mid-2024, shortly before the release of the MAYA album, a momentous event took place at the Ecoaldea Atlántida in Cauca, Colombia. Leaders of knowledge from the nation’s principal ethnic groups gathered to bestow a special blessing upon four medicinal plant healers, one of whom was Maya Martínez Gómez, MaYita.

The gathering, titled ‘The Return of the Goddess, the Mother at the Altar,’ was a multicultural and inclusive event that celebrated the role of Indigenous and mestiza women in the world of sacred plants and their significance in preserving ancestral traditions and knowledge.

The five-day encounter brought together national and international sages who shared their knowledge and medicines centered around the feminine force and its crucial role in spirituality and human balance.

MaYita was invited as a guardian of kambo, tepezcohuite, jurema, and bufo medicines. She is also the founder of the Somos Sanctuary NGO in New York, and a therapeutic artist and musician.

The return of the goddess and the challenges on the path of knowledge for women

“I believe there is a calling at this present moment: a call to restructure and rebalance our internal polarities. The return of the goddess, the mother at the altar is also a call to humanity, to review the altar of our home, the internal altar that we all carry within our existence.”

Regarding the difficulties of the path of wisdom and ancestral plants, MaYita commented: “I had to undergo quite demanding training and physical challenges to supposedly be on the same level as men in my path as a medicine woman. However, these experiences brought me strength, discipline, vision, focus, and clarity.”

The return of the goddess delivered a clear and powerful message: we are in the age of women. Therefore we must continue to honor, heal, and recognize the importance of feminine energy in the balance of the planet.
